Legislation to Regulate Online Gambling

Legislation to Regulate Online Gambling

While online gambling is legal on a federal level, each state has the right to regulate the industry. This includes games of chance and skill, as well as sports events. Currently, there is a long list of states that permit their residents to gamble on websites, but there is no legal limit to this. Twenty states have made it possible for residents to play poker and wager on sporting events over the internet. Despite this, most states do not regulate online gambling.

Several bills to regulate online gambling have been introduced in the U.S. Congress. The Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act was first introduced in April 2007 and has since been referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means. This legislation would amend the Internal Revenue Code and create licensing requirements for online gambling sites. Further, it would make it easier for states to regulate the activities of online gambling sites and prevent the spread of illegal activities.

As the number of regulated sites increases, governments across the world are considering how to regulate the online gambling industry. This can improve consumer protection and generate tax revenue. Despite these risks, participation in online gambling is growing rapidly. For example, in Australia, the prevalence of internet gambling rose from one percent in 1999 to 8.1 percent in 2011. A recent study in the UK found that 16 percent of respondents had played at least one type of online gambling in the past four weeks.

In the late 1990s, legislation aimed at regulating online gambling began to take shape. Two senators, Bob Goodlatte and Jon Kyl, had introduced a bill that would limit the types of gambling allowed in the U.S. to horse races and state lotteries. Neither bill was passed, and more than a decade later, the US Senate proposed the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act. In April of 2007, the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act was introduced which would have prohibited the sale of online gambling services to U.S. citizens. However, the legislation did not pass and multiplayer gaming was introduced to the internet.

Although gambling is legal in 48 states, some states have laws against online gambling. For example, the state of Utah has a large Mormon population, and many people fear that gambling will affect their family life. In Idaho, however, it is not illegal for adults to gamble. Nevertheless, it is not a good idea to gamble when the money is coming from your bank account. If you are caught up in an internet addiction, it is imperative to seek out medical care.

There are a few risks to online gambling. First, there are unregulated and unscrupulous websites. It is very difficult to report these companies if there are problems with your account. Second, unregulated gambling sites may not follow the best industry regulations. You can’t trust them to handle your funds. Moreover, online casinos could be a part of a criminal organization. This makes it impossible to contact them and collect your funds.
